If you have ever visited New Bahru, Singapore’s hottest lifestyle enclave, chances are you have noticed the calming presence of Hideaway. A wellness destination that is quickly becoming a go-to for those craving a reset, Hideaway redefines the very concept of self-care and what it means to truly disconnect and unwind.

This is no typical spa. From the moment you step through its doors, the chaos of city life melts away and is replaced by a design-forward, restorative space rooted in ancient wellness practices and backed by modern science designed to restore, revive, and elevate your well-being. Founded by Grant Wee of The Trapeze Group, Hideaway champions contrast therapy – think state-of-the-art infrared saunas paired with icy cold plunges – to boost circulation, reduce stress, and speed up recovery. But beyond the physical benefits, the experience is what sets it apart. Inspired by neuroaesthetic principles, the space is crafted to instantly calm the mind and soothe the senses, offering the kind of serene atmosphere rarely found in Singapore.

Hideaway is like a sanctuary within the bustling city. What feelings did you want to evoke in guests when stepping inside?

We all experience moments when we just want to “hide away” from life’s challenges. We envisioned Hideaway to create an inviting space for people to be able to escape from the world for an hour or two, a real hideout. Our goal is to evoke a sense of luxury that’s warm and inviting, never cold. It’s a place where you can truly let go of the weight of the world, whether you’re recovering alone or connecting with those you care about over shared relaxation.

You have blended traditional wellness practices with a modern concept that has a social element. How do you strike that balance between heritage and innovation?

Hot and cold therapy, or contrast therapy, with saunas and cold plunges, has gained popularity in recent years, but it’s actually long practiced in cultures like those in the Nordics. At Hideaway, we view these practices as timeless, and we embrace its evolution by incorporating modern adaptations, believing that what truly works doesn’t need to be drastically reinvented. This approach aligns with our wellness philosophy, which focuses on helping the body restore itself naturally.

You can also see this blend of tradition and innovation in the design of our Bathhouse, a defining feature at Hideaway. It aims to evoke the nostalgic charm of Singapore’s classic community spaces. The glass block design, reminiscent of my old high school classrooms, is a tribute to those spaces and the memories they hold.

If Hideaway had a signature soundtrack to represent its vibe, what would it be and why?

That will be the song “Shelter” by The xx. The name Hideaway was actually inspired by the lyrics from this song “I find shelter, in this way / Under cover, hideaway.” The playlist at Hideaway is pretty integral to the experience, we wanted to have a unique spin on what a massage playlist should sound like, featuring artists such as Frank Ocean, Cigarettes after Sex, Brian Eno, and more.

What is a small but intentional detail at Hideaway that makes a big impact even though most people might not notice it?

The scent. It’s subtle, and in the background, but it fills every room you walk into at Hideaway. We worked with the folks over at Postcard to come up with a customised scent for the space. It was a fun process, blending different base scents together to come up with something that was uniquely Hideaway.

After enjoying a DayAway at Hideaway, where should people head to next in New Bahru?

Pop in to homegrown bedding store Sojao to pick up some sleep essentials that can help maximise your relaxation. Then, head over to Bar Bon Funk for some pre-dinner tipples (get the +1 For Oat, their version of an espresso martini), followed by dinner at Somma to try Chef Mirko’s innovative and unique take on Italian food.
